Chapter Eleven

Hailey

A decent night’s sleep often helped work out a problem, or at least find a new lead in whatever puzzle embroiled Hailey’s world.

The only thing certain—she was worn down from Trenton’s ass-chewing after her brush with the Jackyls’ gunman.

Omitting Dante’s involvement might bite her in the ass later, but for reasons she couldn’t nail down, she didn’t want to entangle her new acquaintance with the law.

Whatever embroiled Dante with the local faction of organized crime or the leading edge of a rival moving in didn’t make him inherently evil. She wouldn’t throw him under the bus until figuring out where he stood. He’d saved her life without taking one. That spoke of morality.

Not to be outdone, Leigh had descended on Hailey’s loft after her evening shift in a cloud of righteous anger. Her search for the missing teens made inroads into the gang but yielded no results.

After a breakfast of her favorite chocolate cereal, she and Gunther made their way downstairs, where he went out back to do his business before they went into her office.

Classes were in session, so her part-time receptionist wouldn’t arrive until after lunch. For all of Elizabeth’s complaints regarding college courses, she never missed a class.

Once settled with a cup of iced chicory coffee, her computer went through its requisite beeps and chirps before the home screen replicated on her monitor.

Onscreen, Hailey sat between Leigh and Trenton, all with wide grins. Leigh had just won second place in the state championship finals for MMA, mixed martial arts. Continued sparring on a regular basis kept them both in shape.

Gunther circled in place two times before settling in the corner with his head resting on crossed paws. He’d grown restless having missed their afternoon run the prior day. She’d make up for it in the afternoon.

Logic dictated that something linked the Jackyls, GE school, and murdered ATF agent together. Babtiste’s involvement was another mystery she couldn’t solve, yet fit in there—somehow.

A knock at the front door reminded her she hadn’t unlatched the bolt before retreating to her office.

“Stay here, boy. You scare the UPS drivers to death with your long black hair and blue eyes.” A quick hand gesture settled him in place when rounding her desk.

Filtered light through floor-to-ceiling glass brightened the receptionist area and allowed her a view of the street, quiet and serene. A delivery van idled on the road’s shoulder.

Flipping the lock’s thumb knob, she paused before turning the door handle. Had she ordered anything recently? It wasn’t unusual for Leigh to send packages here since she lived in an apartment and often couldn’t take personal deliveries.

Backlighting shadowed the man’s face standing on her doorstep. A wide-brimmed hat obscured the rest, his fingers flying over the screen of his phone as he tapped out a message. Judging by his demeanor, she figured him for a late teen.

It wasn’t until she cleared her throat that he looked up.

And smiled.

It was the same clown who’d shot at her in the alley. “Shit.”

One utterance brought Gunther racing from the office, his vocal response foreshadowing intent.
